Standard Chartered has launched institutional spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether in the United Arab Emirates through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch, becoming the first Global Systemically Important Bank to offer the service in the country.
Eligible institutional clients can trade deliverable Bitcoin and Ether through the bank’s existing electronic trading channels and settle trades with a custodian of their choice. The offering is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.
The move builds on Standard Chartered’s broader U.A.E. digital-asset push, which started with a custody service in 2024, and extends a spot-trading capability the bank first rolled out through its U.K. branch last year. Adding institutional Bitcoin and Ether trading gives clients in the region a fuller path from custody to execution and settlement, all inside the bank’s own network.
Standard Chartered hasn’t disclosed trading volumes, client uptake, or whether it plans to extend the service to other digital assets or markets beyond the U.A.E. and U.K.
Herald View: A G-SIB running spot crypto trading, not just custody, is the more interesting signal than the U.A.E. label. Once one systemically important bank offers deliverable Bitcoin and Ether trading in-house, competitors watching from the sidelines lose the excuse that institutional crypto infrastructure isn’t bank-grade yet.
