Speaking at the Swiss Economic Forum, Ermotti addressed his own tenure as the bank continues navigating the fallout from its Credit Suisse takeover
UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti said he hopes to no longer be running the Swiss bank by 2030, responding to a direct question on the topic during an interview aired by public broadcaster SRF at the Swiss Economic Forum.
“I hope not,” Ermotti said when asked whether he would still be CEO in four years.
The comment comes after earlier Reuters reporting suggested Ermotti could remain in the role well into the second half of 2027, both to steer UBS through an ongoing regulatory overhaul and to give the board more time to identify a successor, given that no obvious internal candidate has yet emerged.
UBS absorbed Credit Suisse in a state-engineered emergency takeover in 2023, and proposals for tougher capital requirements stemming from that crisis have continued to weigh on the bank’s share price. Ermotti acknowledged the lingering impact, saying UBS would likely emerge from the post-mortem on the Credit Suisse collapse “with a black eye.”
Despite the regulatory pressure, Ermotti reiterated his preference for keeping UBS headquartered in Switzerland. “We absolutely want to stay in Switzerland,” he said, expressing confidence that the country and the bank could remain a strong pairing going forward.
