Resona Holdings is buying deeper into JCB, which the two companies describe as Japan’s only home-grown international card brand. The bank group signed a capital and business alliance agreement with JCB on October 15. Around mid-November, it plans to buy 2.24% of JCB’s issued shares from existing shareholders, taking the Resona Group’s holding to 5.27%. The price was not disclosed.
The companies say corporate clients want more efficient payments and collections and better cash management, while individuals want convenient services built into daily life. The alliance pairs JCB’s payment network, merchant base and payment expertise with Resona’s financial services, customer touchpoints and regional networks.
Their joint work will focus on corporate cards and payments between companies, and on spreading cashless payments to regional areas and businesses through both firms’ customer bases and merchant networks. They also plan new services for individuals and business solutions for corporate clients.
The deal builds on an existing relationship. Resona and JCB have run the Resona Credit Card Club Points Plus JCB partnership since 2014, and signed a business alliance in corporate payments in 2024. The release did not include a financial impact estimate.
Herald View
At 5.27%, Resona is buying alignment, not control, and neither the price nor a financial impact estimate was disclosed. The commercial case sits in corporate payments. The two firms have worked together there since 2024, and an equity link gives both more reason to commit products and data to corporate cards and payments between companies. That fee business tends to be steadier than consumer card spending. Regional distribution is the second lever: the alliance pairs JCB’s merchant network with Resona’s regional customer base, which is where the companies say they want to push cashless payments. Corporate card issuance and payment volumes through Resona’s customer base will show whether the stake is earning its keep.
