Manulife has promoted Carrie Tong to Chief Distribution Officer for Hong Kong and Macau, putting a longtime insider in charge of one of its biggest growth engines in Asia.
Tong succeeds Ivan Chan, who is leaving the company.
She will run business growth across all distribution channels, expand partnerships and set the insurer’s distribution strategy in both markets. She also takes on the job of pulling traditional and digital channels closer together as customer habits shift.
The appointment lands as Asian insurers pour money into technology, AI and digital tools to sharpen customer engagement and distribution.
“We are delighted to welcome Carrie to this important role,” said Wilton Kee, Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Hong Kong and Macau. “Her extensive strategy and operations experience, deep understanding of our business, and strong relationships across our distribution community position her well to lead our distribution organisation into its next phase of growth.”
Tong joined Manulife in 2015 and has held leadership roles across strategy, transformation and distribution in Hong Kong and Macau. Most recently she was Chief Operations Officer, a post she took in 2023, where she led work on customer experience, digital transformation and AI-enabled operations. The company credited her with improving operational effectiveness and building a more customer-centric organisation.
Hong Kong remains one of the region’s biggest insurance and wealth hubs, where insurers fight for affluent and cross-border clients through agency networks, bancassurance deals and digital channels. Promoting an executive who spans strategy, operations and distribution signals Manulife’s intent to keep investing in its platform while holding leadership steady.
Manulife serves more than 2.6 million customers across Hong Kong and Macau. The Toronto-based group operates in 25 markets and serves more than 37 million customers worldwide.
The Herald View: Manulife could have hired a digital outsider to signal reinvention. Instead it promoted its own COO. That says distribution transformation in Hong Kong is now an operations problem, not a marketing one, and the people who know where the wiring runs are worth more than a fresh face.
